A RARE coin has been discovered in a Salvation Army's red kettle during a holiday drive.

Workers were sifting through the donations received from shoppers at a local Hyvee store when they found the rare coin wrapped in a dollar bill.

"It’s a Canadian coin and we’re very excited," Amy Cedervall told local CBS affiliate KRCG.

Cedervall is the core officer for the Columbia, Missouri, Salvation Army and was on hand when workers realized that the coin was atypical.

“You know we were counting the last day of kettles and we opened one up and realized that there was a coin tapped up into a dollar bill, and realized very quickly that it was a gold coin, and it is one ounce of pure gold," Cedervall said.

While the coin has not yet been officially appraised, it's estimated to be worth more than $2,000.

Cedervall said the anonymous donation is very much appreciated.

“It’s an amazing thing, that we are just so blessed that somebody decided to honor us in that way, and to honor our mission," she told KRCG.

"It is with those funds that we keep the shelter running throughout the year.”

The Salvation Army has shelters and other resources in the Columbia area, and nationwide, available year-round.

This was not the first instance of a rare coin being dropped into a Salvation Army kettle this year.

Other coins have appeared this year in Indiana, Vermont, and Michigan.

But in Michigan, rare gold coins appearing in the kettles aren't new.

In fact, 2022 marked the 10th consecutive year that an anonymous person donated a rare gold coin, according to the Salvation Army.

The 1980 South African gold Krugerrand is estimated to be worth about $1,765.

One of the coins was again deposited into a kettle in Macomb County, Michigan this holiday season.

This year, it is estimated to be worth $2,031, according to Monex.

Meanwhile, a TikToker shared how he found a drummer boy quarter with a very valuable error.

Someone else recently found a 1969 penny worth $10,000.
